For ALL the Lovers, Revisited.
I haven't posted in a while, since I've been working on a few fun things I can't show just yet. Then I realized I hadn't finished up this sketch I had started on Valentine's Day! I had originally wanted to post three Valentine's Day sketches featuring superheroes, one of a hetero couple (for which I chose Big Barda and Mister Miracle) one of a lesbian couple, and one of a gay couple.
Unfortunately there's not a long list (okay, it's crazy-short) of gay superhero characters to choose from, but a recent addition is Kate Kane, aka Batwoman– who's become a pretty major character for DC Comics. She also has a really badass get-up. Also on the DC line-up is Renee Montoya, a former Gotham City police officer and currently operating as the Question. Kate and Renee once had a relationship, and so I thought I'd do a little tribute of what they once had (and may have again...?).
And don't worry, fellas, I still plan on doing a sketch for you, too! <3

Drum roll, please!

Announcing the new, improved, spectacular Erin Gallagher Illustration website! The new site features all of my recent illustrations, comics, graphic design and sketches– plus it will be updated frequently. Feel free to browse around and please let me know what you think!

I owe this fantastic example of modern technological wizardry to my friend, Rob Harrigan, who knows his way around code but also happens to love vinyl records, old fashioned cocktails and typography of the 60's. Rob [aka Undercard Productions] has done an awesome job and I highly recommend his services for all your website and design needs. Thanks again, Rob!

Kitty Pryde Kicks Ass!
So, I haven't posted in a while, due to holiday craziness and feeling under-the-weather, but I did want to post the finished drawing for my new Kitty Pryde painting– whoo hoo! I'm super-psyched to paint this– and I've gotta do my next Zodiac piece, and another Shop Your Closet post and bake that apple crumb pie, and wrap those presents, and make those brussels sprouts...and...and...

Wonder Woman!
Everyone's buzzing about the new Wonder Woman costume, but have to say, I'm not crazy about it. So here's my version of a Wonder Woman redesign. Okay, so this actually isn't much of a redesign, more like an adaptation or modernization of the current costume– which is how I feel it should be. Wonder Woman is an icon. Regardless of how "silly" or non-functional her costume is, she's been an icon for so long, I don't think it's possible to completely change her look and still have the same effect.

I think we have to keep the eagle/WW breastplate; it just fits so naturally and nicely over Diana's endowments! I think the star granny-panties do have to go, but I don't think pants are the answer, either; everyone wears pants...a superhero shouldn't look like every girl out there wearing leggings or skinny jeans– or heaven forbid– "jeggings". So, hot-shorts to the rescue! Low-cut and very short, in a dark navy. Add a white belt with a gold star belt buckle and you have some nice shapes and colors breaking up the form. And what powerful woman with strong, thick legs wouldn't look amazing in hot-shorts + over-the-knee boots? But just so they're not too ordinary, keep the red with white stripe color scheme. I see no need at all to change the bracelets– they are sweet. I did think the star tiara was a little on the silly side, but she is a princess, right? How about a call back to her regal Greek roots with a golden Grecian headband? Add a golden lasso and we're done!

Simple, I know, but when it comes to an icon, there's only so much we can do!

Sketch Cards!

I did these 2.5" x 3.5" sketch cards with brush pens and Copic markers at King Con to keep busy and they were a lot of fun. I'll definitely be doing more at MoCCA and having them for sale. Which characters should I do next?

KING CON 2009!King Con was this past weekend at the Brooklyn Lyceum in Park Slope, and it was awesome! The husband and I had a great time seeing old friends and meeting new people. It kind of reminded me of how MoCCA felt the first year or two, which was nice. We sold a few comics, buttons and some prints, but the extra fun part was doing commissioned sketches. I did one of an Indian dancer, inspired by the Indian-themed paintings in my portfolio, and one of the Marvel character Modok (a weird ugly giant-headed flying machine with tiny arms and legs), which was fun since I never draw things like that. The person who commissioned the dancer was kind enough to send me a photo and scan of the drawing:

I also did some fun small trading card-style color sketches, which I'll post later. Hope there's going to be another King Con next year!
